I am sick.

I do not feel good. I have been trying to sleep since … I don’t remember exactly, eight or nine last night. I can’t remember actually getting any sleep. I do remember having to sit up to sneeze or blow the snot out of my head or cough that painful cough that means there’s stuff in my lungs, and every time it was half an hour or less after the last time I looked. And I couldn’t remember being asleep in between, but then… can you? I don’t know. So yeah, plus every hour or two I have to get up to pee and then I realize I must be getting dehydrated and drink some kool-aid… It has been a fun night.

Probably it was the working in the rain the other day, followed by working in my wet clothes in the cold. Of course, the actual germs must have come from somewhere, the cold didn’t make me sick, it only weakened my immune system. Oh, and then that night after working in the cold and the rain I didn’t get much sleep, which surely couldn’t have helped. So Friday I was a little sore in the throat and beginning to have sinus pressure and a lot of sinus draining. I thought it might be allergies, but then I had chills all night, and night sweats, so I probably have a fever. Then yesterday I could hardly run the store, which is silly; all I’ve got to do is stand there and smile and take people’s money when they want something. But I felt so cold I had to run upstairs and put on a second shirt. In the middle of August, in Arizona.

So, anyway. I’m having trouble sleeping, I feel awful, and I have to run the store again today. Hopefully people will be in a spending mood. I hate to stand there all day, when I could be laying down, just to not make any money. There’s an added bonus: My grandfather may or may not have an immune system right now, so my being sick could be threatening his life. Woo! [cough, cough, ouch] Yeah. Shouldn’t make any sudden movements or loud noises.

I’m going to go try sleeping again. See what happens. In the morning I’ll see if there’s any expectorant downstairs for me to take. This coughing without coughing the stuff up sucks.

Woo Hoo! Lets try it again!

Okay, so I posted the following over at Iain’s blog, Warning: Possible Spoilers, along with the comments included as well. It looks like the Easyspace servers are working again (who knows for how long?) but I am still looking into other options. I am in talks with Dreamhost about some of their policies and services right now, so we’ll see how that goes. Anyway, here’s the exciting double post:

Okay, I know I probably shouldn’t be posting this over here, but due to some sort of problem I am unable to get a direct response from Easyspace about, no one anywhere is able to run .cgi files on Modern Evil. This includes not only the ability to make posts (and everything else that goes with that, such as building templates and adding new users), but your ability to get anything but an error in the comments and trackback pop-up windows there. So, instead of clicking the “Comments (n)” link on the monthly page, click the posted at “::time::” link which will take you to the page for the individual entry and a comments form there.

I am looking into new hosting options, but there’s a phrase in Easyspace’s terms of service which says that Zero dollars of the annual fee I just paid in July is refundable, even if there are major service interruptions, so I don’t know what I can afford. Oh, and did I mention that as long as I am an Easyspace customer I will be unable to offer content via BitPass micropayments? woohoo!

Okay, Iain, I’ll stop posting on your blog. As soon as I am able, I’ll uhh… move this entry to FYTH. Yeah.

which was followed by this comment:

Two things: I was wrong about the comments. THey won’t work anywhere on ME right now. Oh well. Here’s a comment I was going to try to post on my most recent entry on FYTH, which sortof applies here:

So, I was dreaming a pie-in-the-sky dream of having an iPod, and had almost worked out how I might convince the companies involved I could afford it, when lo and behold, I must pay for a new hosting provider. Preferably one who doesn’t keep forcing me to refer it to the name of this site.

Hooray! It’s like a dream dashed to the rocks! Now I get to pay for hosting again because despite their promises Easyspace still has all sorts of problems!

What I’m thinking of doing, as long as I have paid hosting with Easyspace through next July, is to put up an “I hate Easyspace” forum, where people can be warned not to use Easyspace and can talk about their Easyspace horror stories. Oh, and have it mirrored on a more reliable server.

Ooh! And easyspace doesn’t charge for bandwidth, so every time one of those dumb movies (ie: Matrix Ping Pong, Star Wars Kid, Dumb Macs) that everyone on the internet is going to download pops up, I’ll put it on my Easyspace server for all to enjoy! Woo! Who else has ideas?

Did I mention that the crappy version of Linux they run doesn’t support a complete version of PHP, and thus no one can use BitPass on Easyspace servers? Woo hoo! Oh… I did? Well, don’t you forget it!

Yes, Yes, I love Apple Computers

I thought about putting this in The Pit of Geek, but between worrying about pissing off PC-centric geeks and the fact that this isn’t much news, I decided to put it here.

The following are quotes from audible.com. (Click “What I need”.) They describe what you need to use the product they offer (it’s like books and magazines and newspapers “on tape” or “on CD”, except it’s all online).

To listen to Audible programs on your PC, you will need:

  • Pentium. (or compatible) 200Mhz or higher
  • Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 or Windows XP
  • 32 MB of RAM
  • Audio card and speakers
  • VGA graphics card or compatible video graphics adapter at 256 color or higher
  • Approximately 25 MB of hard disk space for full installation and content files
  • 28.8 kbps or higher modem (56 kbps or alternate method of Highspeed broadband Internet connection recommended)
  • Internet and email access

    Oh yeah, and …

To listen to Audible programs on your Macintosh you will need:

  • Mac OS X
  • iTunes3 or above

I assume they’re forgetting the “internet access” part of their service here, but otherwise their recommendations are safe. If your computer qualifies to run OS X, it’s better than the PC they’re looking for, except you don’t have to think about it. You know what OS you’re running.

Oh, and while you’re at it, audible.com is offering $100 off an iPod with a 12-month audible.com membership through tomorrow, Friday, August 15th, 2003. If you were looking for an excuse to buy an iPod, have the cash, and like listening to books/magazines/newspapers, there you go.

  • Back at the Cafe

I’ve got another 21 pages written so far today, which is great. I’ve put another dolalr into this machine, so I get a few more minutes access here. In a couple of hours when Angela gets off work she’ll either decide she wants to go to Essenza with me or not, and I’ll thus either end up there and be able to get home or… I guess I’ll bus home. The last bus leaves Tempe for north Phoenix at 9. The young woman I leant my CP Beta copy of Forlorn to to read, who was supposed to return it to me this morning managed to forget it, so she will be mailing it to me anyway. Again, all is not lost; I’ve got 21 more pages written now than when I showed up this morning. Admittedly, a lot of this part of the story is copy/paste/read/re-read and make only minor changes to, since this is a part of the book I’ve already re-written once for another purpose. Oh, and having written more by far already than was in what you knew as ‘Forlorn’, I am not yet to the point in the story where I even begin to integrate ‘Forlorn’ itself into the story. Maybe another 20 pages from now, I think.

And from there, it really gets weird.

What else? Going back to Pine tomorrow. Saw S.W.A.T. last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Running out of time here, and really want it to save before it kicks me off. Maybe I’ll see you tonight. Maybe you’ll have to just come up to Pine to see me. Either way, have a great day. I am.

    Just a quick post

So, Mill’s End Cafe no longer has free wireless internet access, which is a bummer. Also, my laptop cannot even see the network of their new, for-pay service, so I don’t even know if I’d want to pay for it. But they do have a single terminal where I can pop ina dollar for ten minutes access. After two days sitting here writing I’ve decided to do so, to make a quick post. I can’t check my email right now, I’ll do that tonight after I bus home from Tempe. I spent the night at Art’s place last night (thanks Art and Callie!) and got back out here and back to work today. So far I’ve got a little over 22 pages written in two days, so not off to a bad start. I plan to bus back to my dad’s place tonight, but then I have to come back out here tomorrow anyway. (I lent a friend who works here my CP copy of Forlorn, and her next shift is tomorrow morning. I sure would like ot get it back.) Plus, if I can convince someone they want to drive me back to north phoenix afterwards, I will likely be able to attend the poetry slam at Essenza tomorrow night. Hey Coup, you wanna come out to the poetry slam? Your charms and good looks are more likely to get you a ride back to that side of town than mine, and maybe I can hitch a ride back with you. ::winkwink:: Anyway, something will happen. Everything’s going to be fine.

Not much time left on this dime, so I’m going to hit save and hope it finishes rebuilding. If you’re an east valley resident who wants to make contact with me today or tomorrow call me. If you don’t have my number, sigh, I won’t be able to get an email from you until I get home tonight. OH well. Later.
