Woo Hoo! Lets try it again!

Okay, so I posted the following over at Iain’s blog, Warning: Possible Spoilers, along with the comments included as well. It looks like the Easyspace servers are working again (who knows for how long?) but I am still looking into other options. I am in talks with Dreamhost about some of their policies and services right now, so we’ll see how that goes. Anyway, here’s the exciting double post:

Okay, I know I probably shouldn’t be posting this over here, but due to some sort of problem I am unable to get a direct response from Easyspace about, no one anywhere is able to run .cgi files on Modern Evil. This includes not only the ability to make posts (and everything else that goes with that, such as building templates and adding new users), but your ability to get anything but an error in the comments and trackback pop-up windows there. So, instead of clicking the “Comments (n)” link on the monthly page, click the posted at “::time::” link which will take you to the page for the individual entry and a comments form there.

I am looking into new hosting options, but there’s a phrase in Easyspace’s terms of service which says that Zero dollars of the annual fee I just paid in July is refundable, even if there are major service interruptions, so I don’t know what I can afford. Oh, and did I mention that as long as I am an Easyspace customer I will be unable to offer content via BitPass micropayments? woohoo!

Okay, Iain, I’ll stop posting on your blog. As soon as I am able, I’ll uhh… move this entry to FYTH. Yeah.

which was followed by this comment:

Two things: I was wrong about the comments. THey won’t work anywhere on ME right now. Oh well. Here’s a comment I was going to try to post on my most recent entry on FYTH, which sortof applies here:

So, I was dreaming a pie-in-the-sky dream of having an iPod, and had almost worked out how I might convince the companies involved I could afford it, when lo and behold, I must pay for a new hosting provider. Preferably one who doesn’t keep forcing me to refer it to the name of this site.

Hooray! It’s like a dream dashed to the rocks! Now I get to pay for hosting again because despite their promises Easyspace still has all sorts of problems!

What I’m thinking of doing, as long as I have paid hosting with Easyspace through next July, is to put up an “I hate Easyspace” forum, where people can be warned not to use Easyspace and can talk about their Easyspace horror stories. Oh, and have it mirrored on a more reliable server.

Ooh! And easyspace doesn’t charge for bandwidth, so every time one of those dumb movies (ie: Matrix Ping Pong, Star Wars Kid, Dumb Macs) that everyone on the internet is going to download pops up, I’ll put it on my Easyspace server for all to enjoy! Woo! Who else has ideas?

Did I mention that the crappy version of Linux they run doesn’t support a complete version of PHP, and thus no one can use BitPass on Easyspace servers? Woo hoo! Oh… I did? Well, don’t you forget it!

  1. Also, can you explain to me why one would use boilingpoint.com as their host, as was suggested? I just looked at their pricing structure, and well, frankly, SUCK.

  3. Maybe boilingoint.com people are REALLY NICE… Or never go down. Or something. I don’t know. Maybe BitPass has a stake in them. What do I know?

Also, after reviewing the ipowerweb site and help files and lengthy legal agreements, I have come to the conclusion that they appear to be fairly evil. Do you know anyone who has used them and is happy with it? I don’t remember what you said before.

And yes, I was looking at the Sweet Dreams package at dreamhost. As far as I can tell, they have no intention of being evil. In fact, their TOS seems to be put together in such a way that … well, there are things missing from it that let companies screw users. Things that exist in the Easyspace and E*TRADE TOS, and which there are three or four times as much of in the ipowerweb TOS.

    Me sleep more now.

  5. This is one of the worst providers I have ever had the dis-pleasure of using. They wrecked my business by deleting everything I had set up on my web server. They would not respond to any emails sent to their support staff. They then went on to delete all data from my database once I had restored my website through no help from them. They then replaced my main page with a page full of their advertising. They cost me over
