Movies of 2005, my favorites

Alright, so. There were … 53 titles with stars on the last list (indicating that I really liked them). The following six were also italicized, meaning that I feel stand out in my mind/heart as all-around great, great movies. I have sorted them here in order of preference, with my favorite, Junebug on top:

Junebug
I Love Your Work
Natural Route, The
Crickets
Beat That My Heart Skipped, The
Green Street Hooligans

The next list is movies that I already own on DVD (alphabetical):

Constantine
Cursed
Devil’s Rejects, The
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The
Jacket, The
Kingdom of Heaven
Kung Fu Hustle
Layer Cake
Phantom of the Opera, The
Sideways

Considering I already paid to own them to watch them again and again at my leisure, those movies are also ones I consider to be quite good. Kung Fu Hustle, Cursed, and Phantom I have already seen several times each. But some movies from my list have not yet been released on DVD (or I have not yet found at a good price), so the following is a list of the movies from 2005 that I expect to purchase on DVD when the opportunity arises (in addition to the four of the top six I listed at first which are feature films) (alphabetical):

3-Iron
40 Year Old Virgin, The
Elizabethtown
Everything Is Illuminated
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Me and You and Everyone We Know
Millions
Night Watch
Rent
Serenity
Sin City
Son of the Mask
Squid and the Whale, The
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
The Merchant of Venice
Walk the Line
War of the Worlds
Yes
Zathura

Of note is that I will wait for a more definitive 6-film box set before I buy the Star Wars movies, and that I will probably wait until the second and third films in the Night Watch series are filmed, shown, put on DVD and collected into a nice box set before buying that one, too.

But that makes 35 titles as the “top” of 2005 theatrical releases, with no delineation between the actual top 4/6 (4 feature films, 6 total “top” films) and the rest of the pack, and I’ve given little hint among the 29 I own or plan to own which I prefer over the others… but I never claimed to be good at this. Not to mention the 107 films of 2005 I have not yet seen, several of which I expect to be really good (Munich, Match Point, Paradise Now) when I get around to them… But I know people like lists, so here you go.
