Cafepress Closeout

Okay, Cafepress sent me another two emails today. One was informing me that Zoe bought the Non-Sequitor shirt (thanks again, Zoe! You’re our best customer!) and the other was informing me of their new privacy policy and their new membership agreement. I don’t believe in Privacy, so I don’t care about that. But here is the important change to their membership agreement: Now, in addition to the ‘base price’ they charge for every item (onto which you must add some number in order to make any money at all on any sales… I generally add $1 to everything, not wanting to raise the prices too high, but still wanting to be able to earn a little money, personally) they will be charging a per-transaction fee of 5% of the ‘commissions’ you earn.

So, if you sell one T-Shirt (base price, $13.99) with a $1 markup (customer pays $14.99 plus shipping), Cafepress gets $14.04 (plus the diffference between their S/H charges and actual S/H overhead) and you get $0.95.

I guess some people were charging really big commissions and Cafepress wasn’t getting enough of the pie. Maybe someone was charging a full $14 markup on White T-Shirts (customer pays $27.99 plus shipping), and they couldn’t stand to see someone actually making more money than they were.

I’ve been using Cafepress since before Modern Evil was a website! I knew about it when it was Beta (Jon from goats was in the beta), and if I could have gotten into that, I’d have done so. I love the idea of what they’re doing here, or rather, what they used to be doing. Sigh.

SO, effective Monday June 16th, all existing Modern Evil Cafepress Stores (listed below for your convenience) will be closing, and will be replaced by a single last-chance-blowout store that will be open for 29 days from June 16th to July 15th, the last possible day for me to attempt to earn money to Save Modern Evil. I have not decided what will or won’t be in the 29-day store, and I may in fact change the merchandise every day of the 29 days. Whatever it is, assume that right now (and the next 16 days) is your last chance to buy any of the current merchandise, and that if you see something in the ‘final days’ store you want, buy it – you will never see it again from Modern Evil.
