Someone has a virus

Someone, probably several people, who read this site have computers infected with the WORM_SOBIG.F virus (that link is to the solution) or something like it. Here’s the problem. It goes through your Temporary Internet Files and pulls email addresses out of all the web pages you’ve visited (along with the other, more common sources, such as your address book). It has it’s own SMTP server functionality built in. It takes two of these addresses and sends itself out TO one and FROM the other. Over and over again. And over again.

At least three different IPs are originating these emails, so at least three readers here are infected. EVERYONE, PLEASE get virus scan software and scan your computers. Follow the instructions at the above link, even if you don’t use that brand of virus scan. I’m now getting five emails with attachments every 10 minutes. My computer is immune to this virus (it only effects Windows computers), but it’s a LOT of junk mail and it’s eating all my bandwidth. I’m on dial-up, here people.

Please, please, please scan your systems.

  1. Yeah,one of ’em’s me. >:(
I was fine, but 2 days ago our main department account was getting hit with all the ones that say we have a failed message to no place we visited.

This morning my personal account has 10 incoming and two daemon mails that I have no clue what they are talking about.

I presume my IT department is working on this. I can’t cure myself before I know for sure. So, until then, I will keep screwing it up. Whee! 🙂

  3. Ok, Seriously. This morning, after only 7 hours, I had 174 emails in my inbox. Four of them were not this virus. Two of those four were spam. Because they all had attachments, it took over an hour to dl my mail.

In that hour, 12 new copies of the virus were sent to me.

Please, please, please scan your systems.

  5. Oh, and Coup, sorry to hear you’re infected, I hope your whole company gets better soon.

But there are other people with it out there. At least one AOL user. (I tried tracking a couple of the IPs.)

  7. I use, obviously, yahoo for my email and never get emailed viruses. Yes I know it is not secure but I don’t get any secure emails at that address. ;>

  9. And all of a sudden, at around noon today, they all just stopped.

    Hooray!

Maybe Easyspace did something right for a change!
