Water bill

I want to understand this. I just got my water bill. I know I don’t use much water, and I’m glad it’s low. But these numbers seem odd: The total bill is $25.95, but it also itemizes expenses, and apparently only $1.41 of that is actually for water. Another $1.58 is Sewer Charges, which I suppose is for taking the water etc away, so if I add those charges up, it’s $2.99 for water/sewer and $22.95 in taxes and service charges. Oh, plus a $0.01 fee for water quality.

So, I’m paying $22.95 for the privilege of buying $2.99 worth of water. It sort-of makes me want to give a neighbor $3/month to use their hose for all my water needs. I wonder if there’s any way to talk the city down on the service charges. Not likely.

  1. Most people forget, the people who handle your water also handle your trash, which is alot of what sewer/sanitation is. So alot of those “fee” are for garbage pickup, the trashcan rental, and the recycling if you have it.

  3. Yeah, well. I wanted to focus on complaining about water. If we want to move on to trash, why to I pay $12.75/month flat fee for refuse collection when I only even put my container out for collection once every two or three weeks, when I usually only pruduce one tall kitchen bag full of trash every 8-12 days? My neighbors who fill their entire container almost every week pay the same $12.75/month. I’m paying for other people’s trash. And recycling. Hoo boy. If i’d been seperating my trash, I wouldn’t have been able to fill the recycling container ONCE since I moved in. A year and a half ago. Much like my water usage close to 1/10th the average Tempe residence, my trash creation is also minimal.

Did I say “Hoo boy”? Huh.
