Looking for work

Well, I did some calculations. Based on my understanding of tax laws and my current fixed expenses I need to find a job that pays not less then $12.65/hr. The last job I got started me at $13/hr, and I tried in the nearly three years I was there not to let my expenses rise above that level. I guess I succeeded.

So, if you work for a company in the Tempe/Phoenix, AZ area that’s hiring at or above that pay level in an entry-level position in any field, or a more advanced on in any technical-support capacity, please let me know. I learn quickly, and I have over five years experience working in call centers. I have worked in customer service, technical support, and lower management for a variety of vendors, including a major computer manufacturer, a line of WindowsCE handhelds, a nationwide copycenter, and multiple proprietary softwares. I am comfortable in any Windows or Macintosh environment, and have some experience with Unix and Linux.

Oh, and if I can’t find a technical job I’ll do sales, since my friends have been telling me for years I should be in sales.

Again, if you are hiring or know someone who is, email me at teel@modernevil.com. I live in Tempe, AZ and would prefer to work as near to Tempe as possible, but could conceivably work anywhere in Greater Metropolitan Phoenix. Thank you.

  1. So I haven’t felt the need to share this with anyone but all do it anyways. It is actually really quite weird but I was also fired on friday. They fired me due to excessive tardiness. In the two and a half months I worked there I had shown up late (approx 15 min) twice and so I was booted. Which I really wouldn’t have a problem with but two other girls from my training class were pulled to our managers desk a week ago and was told that they had been late (over six min is late) five times and if they were late again then they would be fired.Hmmmm…I had a feeling they didn’t like me there.

  3. What about temp work? Like Adecco?
That is the trend today in today’s unemployment market. I started 3.5 years ago at Adecco where they sent me on my first job for $12hr. I had only computer and banking experience and a high school diploma. Yeah, you don’t get benefits but have the ability to quit a job whenever you like and pick and choose assignments. In my case, I worked temp for 4 months at an investment firm and then was hired on at $28k a year. Now, I am making $40k with bonuses and benefits. I don’t even have college, but now have a broker license.
They also have parttime available. OR
I hear that the male escort business is booming!
OR find a RICH mate and forgetabout WORK!

  5. I was pleasantly surprised to see Angela at my workplace today. BTW, as long as your refernces pan out okay you have a job, Angela, and I don’t know if they even actually call them. Teel should call me, and do the same, I think.

  7. Yeah they called me today and I start training on Monday. But the job wouldn’t work for Teel right now because he has school from like 3-8 and they are only offering training right now from 4-11. So unless he can somehow miss an entire week of school I don’t think it will work.

  13. Right, well.

I probably shouldn’t say it outright, but I have no desire to increase my knowledge or advance through a company. Most of my technical experience is with specific proprietary systems that couldn’t be applied in other situations, and I’ve never really been officially trained in anything other than those proprietary systems. I don’t want to say things that aren’t true or imply misleading things. Also, I’m just following a standard template for a resume; I looked at what was included in several and selected one based on style. (Also, it is one page when I look at it & print it out.)

Why wouldn’t I put my references right on the resume? I don’t know. Like I said, I’m just filling in a template.

I realise that i have to sell myself to the employers, but just as I wouldn’t be misleading about a product’s features if selling it, I can’t allow myself to be misleading about my features. I don’t have that much experience. I don’t have any real training. I guess I could mention that I operate effectively without direct supervision, since I’ve been doing that for years (and even in my Drawing class, which seems ridiculous to me).

Don’t mind me too much. I’m pretty frustrated right now with the whole process. With the whole situation. That I’m here at all, having to deal with this is causing me real anxiety. Thank you for your suggestions. I will take them into consideration.

  15. I agree that your resume needs a little work. I think the objective that would communicate what you are looking for in a job positively to the HR person would be:

Objective: To find a call center job that provides opportunities based on my abilities and experience while I attend college.

All this is true, and says you have knowledge, abilties, and experience that would be of use to your employer and that you are motivated to use them. It also suggests you would not leave right away because you need to work at the job you find till you graduate from college. But it does not make a committment to that.

I agree with Newtron Dancer that you need to reverse your job order. Logicly the person reading it is most interested in what you just did, not what you did years ago. They have many resumes to read and if they have to search for the basic info they need they will just skip that resume. I listen to talk radio and have heard HR people talk about their jobs and how to do things properly.

Putting your references on it is not bad because you have room. So if you can’t find anything more signifigant to add don’t worry about them.
