Something yellow

My bike is in the shop right now. I took it there Friday night after work. I asked them to do a complete overhaul on it. I also asked them to replace all the parts that were worn out. Based on a quick once-over, this includes the tires, the handlebar wraps, the brake pads, and the chain. The cost of the overhaul is supposed to include the cost of replacing all the cables and the ball bearings, but the guy I talked to wanted to charge me for those, too. With any luck, they’ll replace the rear tube, as well. The estimated cost of the overhaul and parts is $330. If done properly, I should only have to get an overhaul once a year, with maybe a $40 tune-up at 6 months.

The overhaul includes taking every part off the frame, and cleaning everything and replacing all the ball bearings and the cables. So, my bike should very much be in good condition when I get back to it this afternoon. Very much ridable. Very happy. Very good. Yay!

  1. So, the total only came to $298.88, so that was a nice little savings. Still quite a bit of money, but $100 of that was new tires. Red, unfortunately. They didn’t charge me extra for the cables, and the guy at the register couldn’t find the $12/pair road-bike-brake-pads in the computer, so he only charged me for the $5/pair mountain-bike-brake-pads. Every little thing helps.

My bicycle is (mostly) silent again. I say mostly because, while I am riding it, it is silent. The rear brakes are not yet broken in, and squeak a little. Everything has been cleaned and lubed, and even the quick-releases on my wheels are more easy to use. The wheels have been trued, so it rides a little easier, and I’ll wear the brake pads out a little slower. Unless I have a specific repair, I probably won’t take it in again until the beginning of March.

  3. I, however, shall break in in late November, steal it, ride to to Del Taco for some dinner, then over the repair shop to have them install windshield wiper fluid. Then I shall have them put yellow tires on it, and paint the chassis red. Then I shall feed it a bowl of chili.

    Viva la revolution!
