I have a whiteboard in my sitting room. At the top it says “What do you want?”. For a long time, the only other thing on the board was “rest”. Over time, I found myself more and more able to rest. my insomnia has passed, perhaps for a season, perhaps for longer, and I am able to get a good night’s sleep. Then, after considering it for a long time before putting it up, Saturday morning I put the word “write” on the board.
Later that day, as I was walking someplace else with yard tools on my mind, I passed a yard sale and I saw a typewriter of a style that … very much appeals to me. I was able to purchase it with the last of the cash in my wallet at the time, $14. It works, and with a replacement ribbon, should be a wonderful tool. I have already written a page or two on it. It feels good.
It is an old Remington Portable Model 5.
That’s so interesting. I had one just like that many many years ago. Mom and I found it at a yard sale. A lot of the keys stuck and it was very hard for my small fingers to punch the keys, so after a while I gave up on it. I wonder what ever happened to it? I don’t know how old I was, but definitely preteen. Who knows, it could be packed in a box in one of the many storage rooms at Mom and Dad’s. Good luck with yours. If anything those old typewriters are so mysterious and romantic and look great just sitting around. (Or the romanticism could be quit inspiring and result in wonderful writing.)

Remins me of the typewriters in Naked Lunch, as well. Now, who do I know who has seen Naked Lunch? I know my dad wouldn’t watch the whole thing, so maybe my mom or … maybe Marie.
Anyway, I ordered half a dozen ribbons for it today. They’ll arrive next week. Pretty cheap too, considering the age of the typewriter.
