DVDs on Sale now!

Okay, so … I haven’t been buying DVDs lately, what with the having no source of income. When I had a job, I spent probably an average of $300/month at Zia on DVDs and a few CDs. I haven’t (until today) even really set foot in Zia in probably a month, and haven’t spent money there in two. So when I went there today and there was a huge “ALL DVDs ON SALE!” sign in the front door, and almost all DVDs were marked down $2 (including used DVDs, meaning some are as cheap as $6.99!!!), and the DVD section has expanded to fill a fourth seven foot high four foot wide shelving unit, I naturally assumed that it was because I hadn’t been shopping there enough.

I had been planning on getting together a batch of old CDs I never listen to and taking them down to Zia for store credit (or cash, if they accept enough of them), but I haven’t yet put anything together. I felt it was a safe enough gamble to not put the couple of DVDs I want the most on hold while I come home to see about getting CDs together, and I hope they’re there when I get back later. I also hope that Zia is doing well enough to buy my CDs.

I’m feeling pretty good today. In addition to the “Little things” I mentioned last night, there are some other things I won’t go into today, but will go into later, when it is more safe to talk publicly. Still, good things. We’ll see how they work out in the next few days. I’ll let you know if I get the DVDs I want, and what they are, later.

  1. I didn’t even really look to see which three or four CDs they took, but I guess the Decade double CD was as valuable as I’d expected, because for that trade plus $1.50, I got three new DVDs:

    The Anniversary Party
    The Time Machine
    Strictly Ballroom

Since the stack of 15 or so CDs I took were among those I never listen to and have no intention of listening to, so it was like 50cent DVD day! And I still have 11 or 12 of the CDs! Maybe they’ll buy them some other day, and I can get even more new DVDs!

  3. Have you tried going to Bookman’s? It’s on Southern and Country Club, I think. They have a growing used DVD collection and you get a decent amount of store credit for trading in books, CDs, DVDs, and other stuff.

  5. You have no idea how far away southern and country club is from here on a bike. Making it more fun is that there are no lanes for bikes for 80%+ of the way there and back. Hooray!

I’ve been to Bookman’s once or twice, but for the time and energy and danger involved in getting there, it did not seem worth it for the value they offer. People are always telling me about how much time they spend there and how much money they save there, and I hear that the Bookman’s locations in Tuscon are far superior to the one in Mesa, but that’s even harder for me to get to.

Mostly I’m comfortable and content staying with stores within easy reach. When Changing Hands moved, I basically stopped buying books anywhere but online. And their new location is even closer than Bookman’s, i believe. This is part of the price of not driving, I suppose.

  7. I take a lot of books and stuff I get for cheapo or free and get credit there, but you can’t use book credit on DVD’s (which are ridiculously overpriced and getting worse all the time there). So, I keep tabs on their extensive graphic novel section and grab the occasional gem.

It’s not so much that the Tucson ones are better. Each one just seems unique in its strengths and weaknesses. The one on Ina Road down there, for example, had like seven graphic novels and I REALLY had to hunt to find them, but had a much better game and jigsaw puzzle section. The one in Flagstaff is designed for a chiefly student population. I think you’d really like the Flagstaff one Teel. You should go up there if you go to one. Yes, that seems best. Especially this time of year.

  9. I’ll hop on my bike tomorrow afternoon. Wait, no. Movie screening tomorrow night. Wednesday. I’ll start riding that direction Wednesday. I should get there… right after I die.
